Remembering Walter Wieand

The Gauverband Nordamerika is in mourning for one of the key figures in the history of our organization, as Walter Wieand passed away on January 17, 2024.

Representing SGTV Edelweiss Buffalo, Walter was a major contributor in the formation of Gauverband Nordamerika at the first founding meeting in Milwaukee on January 15, 1966.  His first executive position was Kassier, from 1966 to 1967, followed by 2.Vorstand from 1967 to 1974.  He began his long-standing position of 1.Vorstand in 1974, and both faithfully and successfully led the organization until 2001.  Walter was named Gauehrenvorstand on May 4, 2002.

During his tenure as 1.Vorstand, Walter actively promoted the connection between Bavaria and North America, laying the groundwork for the Patenschaft with the Gauverband Nordamerika and the  Bayerischer Trachtenverband.  Walter also initiated the Executive Board Meeting weekends, recognizing the need for an interim gathering between the years of the Delegates Meetings.  In addition, Walter diligently wrote the history of our organization that appears in the Gauchronik.

Walter always had a great presence in the boardroom, leading with calmness and diplomacy.  His gentle and soft-spoken personality made for an excellent leader, respected by all.  He was legendary.

On a personal note, Walter was a treasured friend, from early days of friendship between our clubs, Buffalo and St. Catharines.  He continued to be a mentor to me throughout all the years, offering sage advice, suggestions, and wise words.  I will miss him deeply.

Our sincerest condolences to his wife, Joanne, and daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Eric von Recklinghausen, and the SGTV Edelweiss family.

Ruhe in Frieden
