This "dictionary" is a list of frequently used German words and expressions with their brief English equivalents. The words deal only with "Tracht" -- for example, cloyhing, jewelry, special events, animals, adjectives frequently used to describe Trachtlers, and expressions. Keep in mind that the pronunciation and exact meaning of the German word varies depending on where you are in Bavaria!

Brautguertel Bridal belt, a piece of jewelry worn around the hips by the bride; made of gold or silver; origins in the mid-1800s. Symbolizes togetherness or belonging and fertility.
Brosche Broach; pin worn by men at the neck of their shirt.
Bua, Buam Boy(s), refers to boys or men
Bundhose Knickers
Bursche(n) Young fellow(s)

Charivari, Charikekette, Charistecker Char = things, Vari = assorted; refers to the jewelry from which hangs various pendants. May either be a chain (kette) across the mid-section or a pin (stecker) worn at the hip. Traditionally worn by men; recently adopted by woman to wear on dirndls only.

D

Dachs Badger (Dashsbart - worn on a Charivari or as a hat ornament)
Dirndl(n)

a. Girl or woman

b. Jumper style dress with blouse and apron. Origin based on everyday, work dress of the past.
