Want to Submit an Article to the "Gauzeitung"?
Who may submit an article? Any member Verein or any non-member Trachtenverein. Any
individual may submit an article. The objective of the Gauzeitung is to inform about things
of interest to fellow Trachtler.
What can it be about? Any activities in your Verein; Verein anniversaries; "Trachten-
related" trips that individuals or the Verein takes to Bayern or Tirol (what did you learn,
see, who did you meet, how did you meet?); special traditions or the history of your Verein.
Honor a longtime member or report on an award given to a member or your Verein. Describe
what’s in store for an upcoming Fahnenweihe or other major event; report what happened after.
Submit an editorial/opinion piece for the "Kritisch G’sehn" column. Translate an article from
the Heimat- und Trachtenbote (be sure to include the issue number and original title).
Research a custom and write about it. Interview people. Submit a pictorial article with
several pictures and a brief description. Write about a German landmark in your city. Do a
"year in review" of your Verein’s life. Write about your local German community, how many
clubs are there, how do they interact? How do you recruit new members, keep members
interested?
How do you submit an article? Several ways are possible to get the article to the
Editor/Publisher, Wilhelm Banzhaf.
Submit via email:
a. Include the entire text in the email (cut and paste from your word processing program
or type directly into the email).
b. PC users: Use Times or Helvetica font. Save your file as a Text file (in Word, do
"save as," then select "MS-DOS Text" from the "save as type" pull down menu). This will give
the file a ".txt" extension. Email the file as an attachment. Do not include pictures in
your Word file; pictures need to be separate files.
c. Mac users (the Editor’s choice!): Use Times or Helvetica font. If you have
QuarkXpress, save the file as a 5.0 or lower. Otherwise, save the file as a text document.
Email the file as an attachment.
If email submission is not possible, snail-mail a hard copy or a disc or fax a copy of the
article.
How do you submit pictures & how many are allowed?
Submit one or many photos; as many as possible will be included with the article. Although
you may submit color or B/W photos, the photos will print in black and white.
Digital: Pictures should NOT be imbedded in your text file. Send a digital ".jpg" file of
the photo via email to the Editor. Scan on "Best Photograph." (Typically, the file size is
about 300KB. Don’t lower the quality to make them a smaller file; the result may not be
suitable for printing!) Email no more than three photos per email to make download time to
the Editor’s dial-up service manageable. If you have a large number of photos, you can snail-
mail them on a computer disc.
Photos: Send an actual photo to the editor, who will scan the photo(s) and return it to you.
Will the article be edited? No. Spelling errors will be corrected but the text
will not be changed. Be sure you have facts and spelling of names and places correct. Photos
may be resized or cropped to fit.
How long can the article be? There is no limit on the length of an article. If the
article is long and enough space is not available in one issue of the Gauzeitung, the article
will be continued in the next issue(s).
Is there a deadline? The Gauzeitung is published ten times a year at fairly regular
intervals. There is no firm deadline. The article will be published as soon as possible after
it is received. If you want to be included in a particular issue, contact the Editor to find
out when an issue is going to press.
Can an article be rejected? It hasn’t happened yet, but... The Editor does have the
right to return an article at his discretion.
