Hello,
my name is Matt La Course. I am 10 years old and I belong to
a German Folk Dance group.
Something
that was really important to me was when I was the first youth
dancer ever to dance in the first Kinder Einzelplatteln Exhibition.
I was excited as a puppy getting a new bone. My parents were
anxious. My dance partner was nervous. I was in New York in
the majestic Catskill Mountains. The judges were ready. Heidi
von Recklinghausen (the organizer) was ready.
But
wait a minute. Let me back up and tell you the whole story.
It
all began in March 2001, when the head dancer in our group asked
who would be interested in participating in the first Kinder
Einzelplatteln, which would be held at the Gaufest, a convention
of German Dance groups like ours, in New York in July.
I
raised my hand and said "I would, and I'd liketo dance
the Haushamer", "Okay", my dad said (for he was
the head dancer). Later, we found out that I was going to be
the first male dancer in the exhibition.
Before
that time, I was already practicing perfect Plattlen perpetually.
However, I felt I had to substantially increase my practicing
because I knew that I was going to have to set the tone for
the entire event.

For the next several months, I practiced extensively. I practiced
at dance rehearsal and I practiced at home. I even practiced
at school, but I made sure no one knew what I was doing.
Sooner
that I could believe, it was time to leave for New York. Myfamily
and I boarded our flight and flew to New York. We spent time
in New York City for a family vacation before the Gaufest. Then,
it was time to drive to the Nevele Resort.
The
morning of the exhibition, I got up early and put on my Tracht.
After eating a hearty breakfast, I went with my group to the
ballroom. I lined up with my partner and waited.
Then
I heard Heidi von Recklinghausen announce, "The first couple
today will be Matt La Course and Erin Betts from Schuhplattler
Gruppe Edelweiss-St. Paul.
My
accordionist started to play and we marched on the dance floor.
I danced my heart out and received tremendous applause. Everyone,
including the judges, said they loved my performance.
In
conclusion, it was thrilling, but exhausting to be the first
male dancer for the first Kinder Einzelplatteln in this country.
In my opinion, I did my best, and I can¹t wait until next
time. Only one year to go until the next Gaufest in Philadelphia!
